Frequently Asked Questions
Assessment sessions will look different depending on the age and communication profile of your child. Assessments may consist of some or all of the following:
- A formal assessment
- Parent questionnaires or interviews
- Collecting a language sample
- A play and social communication observation
- A review of previous medical or therapeutic documentation
- Connecting with other professionals on your child's team
Therapy is child-led and play-based. Therapy is a safe, playful space where your child can explore and develop their communication skills. Recognizing each child's unique abilities, therapy activities and levels will be chosen and tailored to your child, building on their strengths.
No. Some parents and families will receive recommendation or referral from another health care professional, but this is not required. Private speech and language services are available through self-referral. When you select "Contact" in the menu above, you will be able to fill out a short intake form, and I will do my best to connect with you within 3 business days.
At this time, services will be offered in-office or via teletherapy. However single session consultations or appointments at home, school, or child care are available and are often beneficial to:
a) observe the child in a more natural setting
b) individualize therapy goals based on practical and common activities
c) support teachers and caregivers by providing realistic strategies they can try in their respective environments
Attending sessions with your child is not mandatory, however, I highly encourage parents to attend sessions with toddlers. Parent coaching is best practice in early intervention, and it will help the parents support their child's communication at home, in daily routines. Children's parents who are taught early intervention strategies show better outcomes than those who receive a quick overview explaining the therapy strategies. Parent involvement can increase the confidence of both the parent and the child!
